Postwar Slowdowns and Long-Run Growth: A Bayesian Analysis of Structural-Break Models

چکیده
Using Bayesian methods, we re-examine the empirical evidence from Ben-David, Lumsdaine and Pappell (“Unit Roots, Postwar Slowdowns and Long-Run Growth: Evidence from Two Structural Breaks”, Empirical Economics, 28, 2003) regarding structural breaks in the long-run growth path of real output series for a number of OECD countries. Our Bayesian framework allows the number and pattern of structural changes in trend and variance to be endogenously determined. We find little evidence of postwar growth slowdowns across countries, and we find smaller output volatility for most of the developed countries after the end of World War II. Our empirical findings are consistent with neoclassical growth models, which predict increasing growth over the long run. The majority of the countries we analyze have grown faster in the postwar era as opposed to the period before the first

A Bayesian Approach Based on a Markov - Switching
We hope to be able to provide answers to the following questions: 1) Has there been a structural break in postwar U.S. real GDP growth toward more stabilization? 2) If so, when would it have been? 3) What's the nature of the structural break? For this purpose, we employ a Bayesian approach to dealing with structural break at an unknown changepoint in a Markov-switching model of business cycle. ...
متن کاملThe Structural Break in the Equity Premium
This article uses Bayesian marginal likelihood analysis to compare univariate models of the stock return behavior and test for structural breaks in the equity premium. The analysis favors a model that relates the equity premium to Markov-switching changes in the level of market volatility and accommodates volatility feedback. For this model, there is evidence of a one-time structural break in t...

Inflation is one of the most important problems in Iran throughout last decades, and the historical studies of inflation trend in Iran indicate persistence of this variable. Inflation persistence refers to the tendency of inflation to converge slowly towards its long-run measure (equilibrium inflation) in response to various economic shocks. The historical measuring of inflation persistenc...
متن کاملLong-Run Growth of IRAN's Economy from the Lens of Export-Led Growth Model (Application of the Time-Varing Approach)
In 1979, Tirlwall introduced a model called the Balance of Payments Equilibrium (BOPE) model, stating that demand growth could be curbed by the balance of payments deficit, thus limiting further economic growth. The important point in examining the Tirlwall law is the important role of oil exports in providing foreign exchange resources and the important role of these resources in the balance o...
متن کاملARDL – Analysis of the Relationship among Exports, FDI, Current Account Deficit and Economic Growth in Pakistan
T his paper empirically examines the relationship among exports, foreign direct investment, current account deficit and economic growth in Pakistan during the period 1975-2016.We adopted the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to co-integration together with ECM techniques to trace the long-run as well as the short-run relationships. The results demonstrate the existence o...
